The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 18, 2009
10:30 a.m.
Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 104:1-9, 24, 35 (Pew Bible page 483); Job: 38:1-7, (34-41) (page 420) The Lord answers Jobs complaints with marvelous images of the vastness of creation. Hebrews 5:1-10 (page 973) Jesus is superior to the high priests of the temple. Mark 10:35-45 (page 823) Jesus teaches that true greatness comes through serving others.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Lord Jesus, we are those who have heard you say, Follow me. And we have responded. We have come to you as we are, to become who you would have us be, strong and faithful followers of the way. Challenge and correct us; make us and hold us as individual followers and as your church, that we may fulfill our potential and your intention. May our discipleship point clearly to you, the one we follow in love. Amen.
THE GATHERING
BELL PEAL
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME
PRELUDE Soul, Adorn Thyself with Gladness Johannes Brahms
*INTROIT (Borrowed Light) If All You Want, Lord, Is My Heart St. Anne
CHOIR: If all you want, Lord, is my heart, my heart is yours alone,
providing I may set apart my mind to be my own.
ALL: If all you want, Lord, is my mind, my mind belongs to you,
but let my heart remain inclined to do what it would do.
CHOIR: If heart and mind would both suffice, while I kept strength and soul,
at least I would not sacrifice completely my control.
ALL: But since, O God, you want them all to shape with your own hand,
I pray for grace to heed your call to live your first command.
*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: God of grace, who leads us into the challenges of everyday life,
PEOPLE: refresh us with your mercy.
LEADER: God of love, who calls us out of trouble into peace,
PEOPLE: refresh us with your mercy.
LEADER: God of the lost, the hurt, the oppressed,
PEOPLE: refresh us with your mercy.
LEADER: God of our successes and struggles,
PEOPLE: refresh us with your mercy.
LEADER: God of mystery, who calls us always into the unknown,
PEOPLE: refresh us with your mercy.
ALL: Let us worship our God who refreshes us with mercy!
*HYMN #481 Praise the Lord, Gods Glories Show Llanfair
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: The proof of Gods amazing love for us is this:
while we were sinners, Christ died for us.
PEOPLE: It is because we have faith in him,
that we dare to approach God in confidence.
LEADER: Let us, then, make our confession to God together.
ALL: Lord Jesus Christ, servant of all, how embarrassed we are when you call us to be servants! We work very hard to get our own way. We want to sit in the best seat and be respected by everyone. Even when we try to follow you, we think about how good we will look. In your mercy, forgive us. In the power of your Spirit, transform us. Shape us into people who can love and serve others. Amen.
RESPONSE (Hymn # 376) Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Hyfrydol
ALL: Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit, let us find the promised rest;
Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: To follow Jesus is to see ourselves in the light of his goodness and faithfulness. But when we turn to him in repentance, we are assured that our sins are already forgiven and forgotten by God, that nothing we have done or ever may do can separate us from the love of God.
PEOPLE: This is the good news of the Gospel!
ALL: Praise be to God!
*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.
CHILDRENS SERMON Eric Houghton

Christ has called the church to this mission and given it the gift of the Holy Spirit. The church maintains continuity with the apostles and with Israel by faithful obedience to his call. Amen.

PRAYER FOR PEACE - THE RIGHT TO FOOD During the Mission Fair last week, we had several exhibits describing what we can do to provide food to poor people. Those missions included SHARE, RCS, HEP, the Society of St. Andrews, and the Beth-El Farmworker Ministry. Many in our congregation work every day to assist others in getting enough food for their families. The first week of October was in fact named by the Presbyterian Church (USA) as a week of action on the right to food when food prices are pushing millions of people into poverty. There is a strong relationship between trade, agriculture, food and human rights. Its a focus of the meetings that were held in Turkey and that we all saw on television where people threatened the representatives of the World Bank and the IMF to find solutions to the global economic crisis that has caused the prices of food to rise so high that families are going bankrupt and children are dying. The short phrase for all these tensions is trade justice but there are many, many ways to say that people should be able to purchase food at a fair price. Trade justice touches us all, both here and abroad. Father in Heaven, bless the leaders of agro-industry and banking who are working so hard to find ways to get food at affordable prices to the various markets around the world. Help families locate food sources that will sustain them and their children. Bless the missions of the world who are trying to bridge the gap to protect the families who have no resources to purchase food. Help them survive this crisis. In your precious name we pray, Amen.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME and are interested in joining First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, please indicate your desire to Pastor ByRoade so we can arrange a gathering of our Session.
