The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Sacrament of the Lords Supper
September 6, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 125 (Pew Bible pages 498-499); Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23 (page 527) Those who are generous to the poor are truly just. James 2:1-10, 11-13, 14-17 (page 981) Do not favor the rich over the poor, for God does not do so. Mark 7:24-37 (page 819) A woman convinces Jesus to heal her daughter. He also heals a deaf man.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: We gather together wearing fancy clothes and plain ones. We assemble with pockets of indebtedness and well- paying stocks. We come together as people rich with hope and of skimpy faith to do your work in this world. As we come, O God, we renew our covenant to work together as the people of your realm, to make this world a better place. Amen.

PEOPLE: We trust in God, who is faithful to us.
LEADER: Be strong in spirit, says the God who carries us through life.
PEOPLE: We trust in God, who surrounds us with love.

*HYMN #220 All People That on Earth Do Dwell Old Hundredth
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: God sent Christ into the world, not to condemn the world,
but that the world through Him might be saved;
PEOPLE: that all who believe in Him might be delivered from the power of sin and death, and become heirs with Him of everlasting life.
LEADER: Trusting in that promise, let us together confess our sins to God.
ALL: O Lord, the One who comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable, You love us, but we have not loved You; You call, but we have not listened. You have given us so much privilege and we have used it for only our gain. Forgive us. Free us so that we can release our hold on the values of greed and embrace the values of the Gospel. Open our eyes to see the desperation. Open our ears to hear the cry of the needy. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen.
RESPONSE (Hymn #261) God of Compassion, in Mercy Befriend Us O Quanta Qualia
ALL: God of compassion, in mercy befriend us;
giver of grace for our needs all availing.
Wisdom and strength for each day do Thou send us,
patience untiring and courage unfailing.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Suffering under the weight of sin,
we eagerly and gladly hear the saving word of God spoken in Christ Jesus.
PEOPLE: And now, as forgiven people, we are free to praise and proclaim Gods amazing grace in transformed living, and boldly share the message of Gods wondrous love for all people.
LEADER: Glory be to God!
ALL: The Lords name be praised!

INVITATION TO THE TABLE
LEADER: Friends, this is the joyful feast of the people of God! Men and women will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the Kingdom of God. According to Luke, when our risen Lord was at table with his disciples, he took bread and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. This is our Lords table. Our Savior invites all who love him to share the feast which he has prepared.

PEOPLE: And also with you.
LEADER: Lift up your hearts.
PEOPLE: We lift them to the Lord.
LEADER: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
PEOPLE: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
-3-
LEADER: It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O Lord our God, creator and ruler of the universe. In your wisdom you made all things and sustain them by your power. You formed us in your image, setting us in this world to love and serve you, and to live in peace with your whole creation. When we rebelled against you, refusing to trust and obey you, you did not reject us, but still claimed us as your own. You sent prophets to call us back to your way. Then in the fullness of time, out of your great love for the world, you sent your only Son to be one of us, to redeem us and heal our brokenness. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:
SANCTUS (Hymnal #581) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
LEADER: You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Sent to be our Savior, He took our flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. His words are true. His touch brings healing. To all who follow Him, He gives abundant life. When evil sought to destroy Him, and He lay in the darkness of death, you raised Him from the grave. He is our risen Lord forever!
MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION (Hymnal #582) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Dying, You destroyed our death; Rising You restored our life.
Lord, Jesus, come in glory!
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION CONTINUES
LEADER: Remembering all your mighty and merciful acts, we take this bread and this wine from the gifts you have given us, and celebrate with joy the redemption won for us in Jesus Christ. Accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving as a living and holy offering of ourselves, that our lives may proclaim the One crucified and risen.

PRAYER FOR PEACE - AFGHANISTANS SCHOOL FOR GIRLS IN KANDAHAR
Two girls were attacked last year because they were on the way to school in Kandahar, Afghanistan. They are back in school, and gifts from around the world have paid for their school to have a bus to take them more safely back and forth to school. However, their parents are frightened for the girls and do not want them to have corrective surgeries to repair their faces after the attack. The girls continue to live as they were left lying to die in the street, damaged, but unbroken. They want to learn, to become strong and to be able to handle family affairs and commerce like women (in other countries) do. They are not afraid. God in heaven, protect the children in the Mirwais Mena School for Girls. Protect their teachers and their bus driver. Even in the midst of the Taliban, this little school endures yet another year. Wrap your arms around the place and the people of this town and bless them all with your joy for living and give them strength. Amen.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING! WHOS ON YOUR LIST?
Each year, we add names to our favorite persons list, people we would really like to remember at Christmas, so heres a place for you to start this years list:
Oh, dear! Getting even a small present for all those cousins and grandchildren, best friends, uncles and aunts gets harder and harder each year. MMMMM. This could be expensive! We have a solution: Consider a gift of yourself!
Commit to give a day a month to Faith in Action, to HABITAT, to sorting clothes at HEPs Thrift Store, or an afternoon to the RCS Food Bank. There are many opportunities for giving of your time and talents in our community. You can make a charitable gift to Heifer International or to Thornwell Home for Children, or to Wycliffe Bible Translators and let that gift be given in honor of your loved ones!
To give a gift in honor of a loved one, come to the MISSION FAIR on Sunday, October 4th. Well have exhibits from 16 missions for you to browse. You may find something that inspires you to give of yourself sometime during the next year. There will be a fair-trade international gift shop, too, for traditional gifts (cash, check, or VISA card). If you want to give money instead of time, we will accept your single check for multiple missions. So plan to spend a little time, look around, find the missions that inspire you where your contribution of either time or money speaks to your heart.
Well be open from 8:00 to noon, so you can stop in before or after your worship service. We hope you will join us.
