The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 23, 2009
10:30 a.m.
Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 84 (Pew Bible pages 472-473); 1 Kings 8(1, 6, 10-11), 22-30, 41-43 (pages 271-273) The Ark of the Covenant is brought into temple. Ephesians 6:10-20 (page 952) Strength can be found in the armor of God and in prayer. John 6:56-69 (page 868) Jesus teaches that life eternal is a gift given by the Spirit.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Grant me the grace, O God, to know what I should know, to love what I should love, to praise what pleases you, and to cherish everything that is precious to you. Keep me from judging simply by what my eyes see, or my ears hear. Help me to know the difference between appearance and spiritual reality. Above all, may I have the grace always to seek your joy. Amen. (*Thomas a Kempis)

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME
PRELUDE Introduction and Variations on AURELIA Hark
INTROIT (Borrowed Light) Unless This Day Be Holy Aurelia
CHOIR: Unless this day be holy all days shall blur to one,
as orderly but empty they march from sun to sun.
But if we keep the Sabbath through prayer and song and praise,
well find the sacred meaning of all our working days.
*ALL: Our worship, like the lightning that lifts the curtained night,
shall cast before us shining what darkness hides from sight:
the wonder and the glory we dimly sense and feel,
the circling sacred presence our busy lives conceal.
*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: Come into my house and worship, says our God.
PEOPLE: Happy are those who feel at home in Gods house.
LEADER: Come into my presence and be at peace, says our God.
PEOPLE: Happy are those who enjoy Gods gift of serenity.
LEADER: Come and let your life be joined to mine, says our God.
PEOPLE: Happy are those who abide in Gods love.
LEADER: Come and be Gods honored guest, for all are welcome in Gods house.
PEOPLE: Happy are we, the dearly loved of a faithful God.
ALL: Let us worship God!
*HYMN #489 Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty Unser Herrscher
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel, says the Lord:
PEOPLE: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts:
and I will be their God and they will be my people.
LEADER: I will forgive their evil deeds, and I will remember their sin no more.
In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to almighty God.
ALL: Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Holy One of God. Even as we confess you are Lord, we admit that we struggle to follow you. Your teachings demand commitment, but we lack energy and imagination. Sometimes we wish we could go away from you. But to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. Risen Christ, have mercy on us. Choose us yet again. Send your Spirit to empower our witness and work. Amen.
RESPONSE (Sing the Faith #2030) The First Song of Isaiah First Song
CHOIR: Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,
and he will be my Savior.
ALL: Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,
and he will be my Savior.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Know that God hears our prayers and will have mercy on all who humbly repent of their sin. Did not God send Christ our Savior to cleanse us of unrighteousness?
PEOPLE: And does not Christ intercede on behalf of those who confess?
LEADER: Let us lay aside our burdens, and take courage from the Gospel. God forgives us through Christ.
ALL: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Iona Community Book
We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of the one God, Maker and Sustainer of earth, sea and sky. Born of Marys womb, faithful to the God of Abraham and Sarah, Jesus healed the sick, served the poor, and proclaimed heaven on earth. Condemned by the religious, crucified by the state, He died, but transformed even death and rose to life everlasting. He blessed the disciples with his Holy Spirit and sent them forth, east and west, north and south. We commit ourselves to Jesus, to one another as brothers and sisters and to his mission in the world in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

NEXT SUNDAY, August 30, 2009 will be the Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time. The scripture readings will be: Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9 (Pew Bible page 449); Song of Solomon 2:8-13 (page 544) A woman is filled with excitement and joy as her lover approaches. James 1:17-27 (pages 980-981) In response to Gods gifts, we are called to be doers of the Word. Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 (pages 818-819) Jesus warns the crowd against being defiled from within the heart.
PRAYER FOR PEACE PAKISTAN From the Presbyterian Peacemakers, we learn that recent violence between Muslins and Christians in Pakistan resulted in many injuries and a number of deaths. The National Council of Churches in Pakistan confirmed nine deaths and lambasted the Muslim extremists who acted in a frenzy of rage over phony blasphemy charges. The Council is demanding that the Pakistani government reconsider the blasphemy laws. Christian organizations in Pakistan announced plans to make a black day on August 11 to protest the persecution of Christians in Pakistan, CNS News reported. The Islamic Society of North America condemned the riots as a frenzy of fanaticism, and stated that Muslims of Pakistan should collectively rise to the occasion [and ] demonstrate their sympathy and solidarity with the affected members of the Christian community. Eternal God, stand with the Christians of Pakistan whose homes have been burned, whose lives have been shattered, whose sense of security has been violated and taken away forever. Provide strength and courage as they seek to begin anew. Provide comfort as they grieve. Provide healing for their wounds. Move the people of Pakistan and the world to respond with gracious care to those who are in need. Guide religious and government leaders of Pakistan to respond with acts that ensure the safety of all the people. Where violence has grasped some people's hearts, break its hold. Where intolerance is the call of the moment, fill people with your love. Draw the people of Pakistan together that all might live in justice and know peace. Amen.
