The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 16, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.

PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 111 (Pew Bible page 490); 1 Kings 2:10-12, 3:3-14 (pages 265-267) Solomon succeeds his father David as king and rules Israel with wisdom. Ephesians 5:15-20 (page 952) Live your lives in ways that show thanksgiving to God. John 6:51-58 (page 868) The flesh and blood of Christ is the food that brings life eternal.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Jesus, just when we think we know you, you surprise us and shock us. You reveal something of yourself and your way to us so that we are confused. Our ways are not your ways. Give us courage to walk with you, even in those times when we do not know where you are leading. Help us to take you in all your mystery, in all your wonder, rather than as we would have you to be. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from Jesus Christ, The Life of the World:
A Worship Book for the Sixth Assembly of the World Council of Churches)

We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

PRAYER FOR PEACE – NIGERIA There are more than 145 million people in Nigeria, with 70% living in poverty. Half of the population is Muslim, half is Christian. The president is Muslim. Nigeria is the fifth largest supplier of petroleum to the United States. Income from sales of petroleum provide 83% of the government’s revenue. It’s clear that none of the revenue is going to the people in the form of jobs or social services. The people are angry. They are hungry and desperate, and elements of the government continue on the path of establishing a very conservative fundamentalist version of Muslim law, Sharia Law, in the states. In these states, there is opposition to Western style education, and teachers are being killed. In recent demonstrations and raids, government officers have killed more than 400 people. People are angry and frightened and the government has become their enemy. Dear God, please help the buyers of petroleum to establish shared benefits from the profits for their people; help the government of Nigeria find ways to educate and feed their people from these profits. Keep the people alert to the terror so that lives lost are reduced, and encourage humility on the part of the officers of the national police force and the government. Help them all find peace so that future lives will not be wasted in this conflict. Amen.

SUPER SATURDAY
“Super Saturday for Discipleship” is the new name and focus of the former “Super Saturday for Christian Education.” The new title reflects broader coverage and offerings of the event, which is for anyone wanting to “grow” in their faith or help others do so. The event will be August 21-22 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Dunedin. New workshop topics include: A variety of ways to grow your church no matter what its size; What’s happening with young adults and how to get them back into the church; Beginning a men’s group; Multiple intelligences for multiple generations and Using beads to tell the gospel story. Brochures are available in the mail room and on the Presbytery web site at: w.

RCS FOOD BANK NEEDS FOOD
Remember to bring to Church your gift of food for hungry families.  The RCS Food Bank will accept checks as well as food.  Financial gifts are used to purchase food in bulk from grocery store warehouses, so please consider giving a check to First Church and write RCS on the memo line.  If you are bringing food, the priorities are pasta, peanut butter, and canned tomatoes.

MISSION FAIR COMING
Our 2009 Mission Fair is Sunday, October 4th.  We have 16 missions who will be exhibiting with us from 8:00 to 12:00 that day when we celebrate World Peace Sunday.  We will have Gift Cards available if you wish to contribute time or money in lieu of traditional Christmas or birthday gifts.  Plan to spend a little extra time at Church that day to walk through the exhibit and get to know something about at least one new mission.

THE VIDEO CLUB will meet Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at Mic’s Restaurant (Patricia Avenue next to Beall’s Outlet) for dinner. We will return to the church at approximately 7:00 to view the conclusion of Mama Mia!
