The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Sacrament of the Lords Supper
August 2, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 51:1-12 (Pew Bible page 452) The psalmist tells of how the Lord provided nourishment to the people in the wilderness. 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13 (pages 248-249) Nathan confronts David regarding his adultery with Bathsheba. Ephesians 4:1-16 (page 951) In Christ, we are called to live in unity and spiritual maturity. John 6:24-35 (pages 867-868) Just as God gave manna in the wilderness, so too God gives us the bread of life, which is Gods Son.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Almighty God, your Son, Jesus Christ, fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the Word of His Kingdom. Renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

INVITATION TO THE TABLE
LEADER: Friends, this is the joyful feast of the people of God! Men and women will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the Kingdom of God. According to Luke, when our risen Lord was at table with his disciples, he took bread and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. This is our Lords table. Our Savior invites all who love him to share the feast which he has prepared.
GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
LEADER: The Lord be with you.
PEOPLE: And also with you.
LEADER: Lift up your hearts.
PEOPLE: We lift them to the Lord.
-3-
LEADER: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
PEOPLE: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
LEADER: It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O Lord our God, creator and ruler of the universe. In your wisdom you made all things and sustain them by your power. You formed us in your image, setting us in this world to love and serve you, and to live in peace with your whole creation. When we rebelled against you, refusing to trust and obey you, you did not reject us, but still claimed us as your own. You sent prophets to call us back to your way. Then in the fullness of time, out of your great love for the world, you sent your only Son to be one of us, to redeem us and heal our brokenness. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs. And with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:
SANCTUS (Hymnal #581) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
LEADER: You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Sent to be our Savior, He took our flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. His words are true. His touch brings healing. To all who follow Him, He gives abundant life. When evil sought to destroy Him, and He lay in the darkness of death, you raised Him from the grave. He is our risen Lord forever!
MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION (Hymnal #582) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Dying, You destroyed our death; Rising You restored our life.
Lord, Jesus, come in glory!
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION CONTINUES
LEADER: Remembering all your mighty and merciful acts, we take this bread and this wine from the gifts you have given us, and celebrate with joy the redemption won for us in Jesus Christ. Accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving as a living and holy offering of ourselves, that our lives may proclaim the One crucified and risen. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By your

PRAYER FOR PEACE NUCLEAR POWER August 6th and August 9th are anniversary dates of the two hydrogen bombs that we dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in 1946. Fire storms took over after the huge explosions, destroying everything for miles and miles. More than 100,000 people were killed, twice that number were injured. Our strategy was to find a way to force Japan to an unconditional surrender, that came on August 15th, but it left many, many wounded, and ruined the atmosphere and ground for generations to come. Those were terrible times. They are what drives our diplomats to carry the firm touch of peace and NOT war. They wish to avoid the explosion of a single nuclear bomb blast, anywhere, since a one megaton bomb would destroy 105 square miles, leaving no escape for the inhabitants. Emissaries from all countries are trying to avoid the nuclear holocaust that would follow such an event. Some people curry short-term favors from rogue nations by selling nuclear technology and equipment which will bring long-term risk to their own nations. All of us should be keenly aware and sensitive to the terrors of nuclear war, and hold nuclear power in great respect. Father, please help our diplomats keep the flame of the past brightly in front of their eyes as they address the threats to world safety. Give them courage and help them find ways leading only to peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Amen.
