The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 26, 2009
10:30 a.m.
Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 14 (Pew Bible page 430); 2 Samuel 11:1-15 (page 248) David hides his affair with Bathsheba by having Uriah killed in battle. Ephesians 3:14-21 (pages 950-951) The author prays for the strength and knowledge of the church in Ephesus. John 6:1-21 (page 867) Jesus feeds five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fishes.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Lord Jesus, we come to you this day, full of hunger for security, desire for love, and yet hope for the future. Teach us, in our hunger, to hunger for your presence among us. Feed us, call us, and save us, for you are our only hope in life and in death, and in life beyond death. Amen.

INTROIT (Hymn #461) God Is Here Abbots Leigh
CHOIR: God is here! As we Your people meet to offer praise and prayer,
May we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share.
Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts
wait the coming of the Spirit into open minds and hearts.
*ALL: Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt
Keep us faithful to the gospel, help us work Your purpose out.
Here, in this days dedication, all we have to give, receive:
We, who cannot live without You, we adore You! We believe!
*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: We have come from north and south, east and west.
PEOPLE: We have come from different states, towns,
and from different backgrounds.
LEADER: Yet we gather together in this place as sisters and brothers in Christ. God invites us to find strength and unity in the common faith we all share. Jesus calls us, come and see! Explore who I am
be followers of The Way!
PEOPLE: Let us come to worship, with eyes and ears open, all our senses alert
LEADER: We come with open hearts and minds, in great anticipation
ready to be surprised by the stirring of the Spirit among us!
ALL: Let us worship God!
*HYMN #462 Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies Ratisbon
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: The proof of Gods amazing love is this:
while we were sinners Christ died for us.
PEOPLE: Because we have faith in him,
we dare to approach God with confidence.
LEADER: In faith and penitence,
let us confess our sin before God and one another.
ALL: Loving God, you call us to be obedient. We are reluctant and make excuses. You teach us to be truthful, but we lie when we think we wont get caught. We act as if you are not there. Forgive us. You teach us to honor one another, but we talk about each other instead. We act as if you are not there. Forgive us. You teach us to share what we have been given, but we accumulate more and more. We act as if you are not there. Forgive us. God, teach us wisdom. Teach us to seek you. You are always there for us; you are our refuge. Help us to do good in your name. Amen.
RESPONSE (Hymn #392) Take Thou Our Minds, Dear Lord Hall
CHOIR: Take Thou our minds, dear Lord, we humbly pray;
Give us the mind of Christ each passing day;
Teach us to know the truth that sets us free;
Grant us in all our thoughts to honor Thee.
ALL: Take Thou our hearts, O Christ, they are Thine own;
Come Thou within our souls and claim Thy throne;
Help us to shed abroad Thy deathless love;
Use us to make the earth like heaven above.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor power, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
PEOPLE: Therein lies our assurance of pardon.
*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

PRAYER FOR PEACE CHINA Chinas far western province Xinjiang, rich in oil reserves, has for centuries been home to a Muslim majority who are the Uighurs. They are Turkic in their traditions and over the last 20 years or so they have become surrounded by ethnic Chinese who have moved into the area for jobs and trade opportunities. The Uighurs are shunned by the Chinese ignored in hiring and trade transactions, ignored on the street, treated as invisible. Over time, many have come to demand a separatist (Uighur) government which the central government strongly opposes. Some Uighurs are more supportive of a Uighur Government than others, so there is unrest among the Uighurs who oppose the violence that has recently occurred; and those who are demanding an independent state. The national Chinese government is playing a strong hand with physical threats to anyone who opposes them. There has been fighting in the streets, and more then 100 people have been killed. Father in heaven, place your loving hands on the Uighurs of China and on the Chinese in their midst. Help them all see the qualities of life and love among their neighbors and find ways to communicate with and to honor each other. Let this be an opportunity to work together toward stronger future relationships that will protect the faiths and customs of all the people. Amen.
