PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 48 (Pew Bible pages 450-451); 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10 (pages 243-244) The elders of the people ask David to rule over all of Israel. 2 Corinthians 12:2-10 (pages 943-944) Paul speaks to the Corinthians about forgiveness. Mark 6:1-13 (page 817) Jesus is rejected in Nazareth and then sends his disciples out two by two.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Jesus, you do not work alone. You reach out and call ordinary folk to be your disciples. We thank you for your graciousness in calling us. Give us what we need to be faithful disciples. You have given us good work to do. Keep giving us the gifts we need to do your work. Amen.

LEADER: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
PEOPLE: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
LEADER: In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to Almighty God.
ALL: God of grace and God of glory, we want glory for ourselves. We want to be strong and independent. We daydream about doing great things. We forget that we depend on you for everything: for the very air we breathe; for your strength that holds us together; for life in the community you create in Christ; for the forgiveness that makes new life possible. INVITATION TO THE TABLE
LEADER: Friends, this is the joyful feast of the people of God! Men and women will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the Kingdom of God. According to Luke, when our risen Lord was at table with his disciples, he took bread and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. This is the Lord’s table. Our Savior invites all who love him to share the feast which he has prepared.

NEXT SUNDAY, July 12, 2009 will be the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The scripture readings will be: Psalm 24 (Pew Bible page 436); 2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12-19 (pages 244-245) David dances with joy at the return of the Ark of the Covenant. Ephesians 1:3-14 (page 949) In Christ we have been blessed with the gifts of adoption, redemption, and wisdom. Mark 6:14-21 (pages 817-818) Herod has John the Baptist beheaded in an act of oppression.

PRAYER FOR PEACE – INDEPENDENCE Yesterday was July 4^th, Independence Day. What a unique and simple concept. It is so strange that other countries struggle to allow their citizens to march, to assemble, to protest, and to question their governments. It is so common to us here in the United States. However, our democracy is only as good as we are, it is only as solid as our votes at the polls, our free statements criticizing our leadership where needed, and our open handling of justice among ourselves. It is worth fighting for. We are very lucky that our military is strong and that our friends and neighbors continue to be willing to join the military to possibly defend the freedoms we cherish. Dear God, please help us understand the precious gift of our public freedoms. Bless our leaders and our military and all the retired or former veterans who have served and suffered for us. Give us the good sense to cherish our freedoms, to speak up when facing outrage, and to step up when facing the threats that surround us. Help us to continue to stand for our rights and the rights of others throughout our world. Amen.

GIFT CARDS NEEDED FOR PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN GATHERING Carolle Carlton and Lynn Steuernagle will attend this conference in Louisville, KY July 11 – 15. Two years ago Linda Frazer took a suitcase full of shoes for children to the gathering. The project this year is to bring $20.00 gift cards from national retailers like Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc. These gift cards will be donated to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and Bellewood Presbyterian Home for Children. If you are able to donate a gift card (before July 7), please bring it to the church office. Thank you for your support in this mission.
