The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Choir Camp Presentation – “The Singing Bishop” by Hal Hopson
June 14, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.

PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 20 (Pew Bible pages 433-434); 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13 (pages 226-227) The Lord sends Samuel to anoint the boy David as king. 2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17 (pages 939-940) Because Christ has died for us, we should respond by living for him. Mark 4:26-34 (pages 815-816) Jesus tells a parable about a harvest growing from scattered seeds.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Almighty God, you have called us to serve you, yet without your grace we are unable to please you. Mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE GATHERING

BELL PEAL
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME

PRELUDE “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” Kaufmann

*INTROIT (A Singing Faith) “O God of Earth and Space” Yigdal
ALL: O God of earth and space, of sea and fire and air,
Your providence surrounds us here and everywhere.
In fruit and rain and tree, in shelter from the cold,
in cooling breezes, flowing wells, now as of old.

(Words © 1981 Jane Parker Huber- used by permission)

*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: God sees with Holy eyes,
PEOPLE: not what the world sees, but what God sees.
LEADER: God sees with Holy eyes,
PEOPLE: little things becoming great things through faith.
LEADER: God sees with Holy eyes,
PEOPLE: and our lives become a test of faith, not knowing the end,
but trusting the journey.
LEADER: God sees with Holy eyes,
PEOPLE: and the love of Christ urges us forward, to live as God calls.
ALL: Let us worship God!

*HYMN #285 “God, You Spin the Whirling Planets” Austrian Hymn

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves
for all of us fall short of the glory of God.
PEOPLE: But if we confess our sins, God, who is gracious and just,
will forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all of them.
LEADER: Let us, then, in humility and faith,
confess our sins before God and one another.
ALL: God of Wisdom, we do not see as you see. We look at others and make judgments. We look on the outward appearance, but you look into the heart. Loving God, forgive our shallowness. Open our eyes to see as you see. Open our hearts to love as you love. Help us to see each one as heart of your heart. Amen.

RESPONSE (A Singing Faith) “Creator God, Creating Still” Rest
ALL: O God, you hear our every prayer, whate’er our land or tongue.
We join with others everywhere in praise of you, our gifts to share,
wherever songs are sung.

(Words © 1981 Jane Parker Huber- used by permission)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Jesus endured the cross that we might be free from condemnation,
free to live a new life in obedience to God our Maker.
PEOPLE: God’s Spirit joins with our spirits to declare that we are God’s children and we will possess with Christ, the blessings of the Father, and the blessings of life in the Spirit.
ALL: Thanks be to God!

*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.”

Mark 4:35-41 (page 816) Jesus rebukes the wind, the waves, and the disciples.

PRAYER FOR PEACE – PAKISTAN The Taliban fooled the government of Pakistan by persuading the government that the lawless Swat Valley could be managed by the Taliban peacefully. The Taliban then began burning schools, beating girls, killing opponents of all kinds, so that the peoples are now thoroughly convinced that the Taliban mean them no good. This is a tragic development because the Pakistan government is stretched so thinly. As we learned from our visiting preacher Mrs. Veeda Javaid who spoke to us May 3rd, more than 70 percent of Pakistani national revenue is used to pay national debts. The balance of governmental revenue pays for the national Army focused on India during all these years. There has been very little funding targeted to education or internal security, and this opened the way for madrasas led by uneducated people and left huge areas without security, inviting a strong fundamentalist force like the Taliban to take control. Now, with hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis fleeing the Valley, the government is facing a huge population of angry, distressed people who are seeking only safe shelter. Father in heaven, please protect the Pakistani Army as they fight to regain control of their northern province. Guide the political leaders in Pakistan, and strengthen the hand of the charitable organizations who can contribute aid. Help them all search for ways to heal and feed these displaced persons to bring them peace. Amen.
