John 17:6-19 (pages 879-880) Jesus prays for the unity and protection of his disciples.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Holy God, as we gather here, we give thanks for Jesus, and for leaders and disciples who have faithfully told and lived the Christian story through the ages. We honor those who give transformative and innovative leadership today. We worship you, our God, the one who designed our life together for support, learning, and service. We worship you, for the hope and promises that are ours today and for all our tomorrows. Amen.

LEADER: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
PEOPLE: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just
will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
LEADER: In penitence and faith, then, let us confess our sins to almighty God.
ALL: Commissioning God, you call us and we come. You bless and anoint us to our task of proclaiming the good news. We confess we often remain silent when we should whisper. We confess that we often whisper when we should shout. Forgive our timidity. Forgive our laziness. Forgive our fear. Forgive our self-indulgence. Give us lungs filled with your holy breath and hearts filled with your holy courage. God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of our minds. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals his love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving human beings. The power of God’s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of his love. Amen.

NEXT SUNDAY, May 31, 2009 will be the Day of Pentecost. The scripture readings will be: Psalm 104:24-35 (Pew Bible pages 483-484); Acts 2:1-21 (page 885) The Spirit falls on the disciples, and they speak in many tongues. Romans 8:22-27 (page 919) The Spirit helps us as we groan with all creation awaiting redemption. John 15:26-27; 16:4-15 (pages 878-879) Jesus speaks of the coming of the Spirit as an advocate to the church.

PRAYER FOR PEACE – MEMORIAL DAY is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (tomorrow). Formerly known as “Decoration Day”, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War ( it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action. Father in Heaven, please bless our military men and women, in all branches and services. Give them patience and strength as they defend our civil liberties and protect our country from harm. Bless military families who have suffered losses and sorrows. Help us all to be respectful of the horrors of war and to never lightly enter into combat. Hold us all in your loving hands. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

THE CHURCH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

CHOIR CAMP – June 8 – 12, 2009 for children in grades 1 through 6 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. The children will learn about hymns by performing a musical based on the Palm Sunday hymn “St. Theodulph”. The children will also write a hymn to be sung at the worship service on Sunday, June 14. (To participate in Choir Camp, children must be present for the worship service on June 14 at 10:30 a.m.) Cost is $10.00 per child/$15.00 max per family. Registration forms are available in the church office. See Stephen Allen for more information.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE ROME! Join us for Vacation Bible School as we discover what it was like to be one of the very first Christians and live in Rome during Bible times. We will visit the apostle Paul who is under house arrest, sneak to the cave where the underground church meets, and take part in games. The adventure will take place from June 8 – 12, 9:00 a.m. until 12 Noon. Ages pre-school through 5^th grade.

PENTECOST OFFERING On May 31, First Church will be receiving contributions for the annual Pentecost Offering. The Pentecost Offering supports youth and young adult programs of the General Assembly through their Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program. Local funds, which make up 40% of the total received, will go to the RCS Haven for abused women with children, and to First Friends Preschool to provide scholarships while parents are out of work. Please plan to give generously to the Pentecost Offering.

RELAY FOR LIFE DIME BOTTLES – Stop by our table today in East Hager Hall between services to pick up your water bottle to start saving dimes for the 2010 Relay for Life. This year our team saved $1,022 in change, that’s nearly _ of the money we raised in total! Saving change is painless, fun, and most certainly adds up. So come get your bottle and get started for next year. Let’s see if we can hit $2,000 for 2010.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON – Saturday, May 30 at Noon in Hager Hall. Tickets are $7.00.
