The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Resurrection of the Lord
Easter Sunday
April 12, 2009
8:45 and 10:30 a.m.
Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 (Pew Bible pages 492-493); Isaiah 25:6-9 (page 568) The Lord promises to swallow up death and wipe away tears. 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (page 935) Paul recounts Christs resurrection appearances. John 20:1-18 (pages 882-883) Women tell the disciples about the empty tomb. Peter sees the empty tomb, but Mary meets the risen Christ.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life. From the waters of death you raise us with him and renew your gift of life within us. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ, and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you, through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE
LEADER: This morning we light the Christ Candle to remind us that in Christ is life and that life is the light for all people. The light has pierced the darkness and the darkness can never overtake the light the one true Light which is found in Jesus Christ. Let us pray.
ALL: O God, we give you praise, honor, and glory for bringing us new life through your Son, Jesus Christ. We rejoice in knowing that we will rise from death like Christ and, in so doing, will live eternally with you. Amen.
*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: Christ is risen!
PEOPLE: He is risen indeed!
LEADER: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
PEOPLE: By Gods great mystery we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
LEADER: Rejoice! Sing praises to God the Creator, God the Redeemer, and God the Holy Spirit. Come, let us praise the Lord!
ALL: The Lords name be praised!
*HYMN #123 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today Easter Hymn
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: God shows no partiality.
PEOPLE: Rather, anyone who fears God and does what is right,
is acceptable to God.
LEADER: Trusting that that is so, let us confess our sins before God and each other.
ALL: God of new life, it is the first day of the week and we have come; it is the day that defines us and we have come. We have come to sing our alleluias, but we secretly wonder, How can this be true? O God, forgive our skepticism. Overwhelm us with the power of your love that conquers sin and death. Send us to go and tell the good news! (Time of silent confession)
LEADER: Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
ALL: Amen.
RESPONSE (Sing the Faith #2115) Christ Has Risen Holy Manna
CHOIR: Christ has risen while earth slumbers, Christ has risen where hope died;
as he said and as he promised, as we doubted and denied.
Let the moon embrace the blessing; let the sun sustain the cheer;
let the world confirm the rumor: Christ is risen, God is here!
ALL: Christ has risen for the people whom he died to love and save;
Christ has risen for the women bringing flowers to grace his grave.
Christ has risen for disciples huddled in an upstairs room.
He whose word inspired creation cant be silenced by the tomb.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live.
PEOPLE: This Easter Day we celebrate the assurance of forgiveness. That is Gods resurrection gift.
ALL: Glory be to God!
*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

THE RESPONSE
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We believe that Christ died for our sins in accordance with scriptures, He was buried, He was raised on the third day, He appeared to Mary, to Peter, then to the twelve. We believe that as by man came death, by man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. We believe that by Gods great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. We believe that Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in Him, though we die, we will live, and whoever lives and believes in Him will never die. Amen.

John 20:19-31 (page 883) Jesus appears to his disciples and convinces Thomas that he has risen.
PRAYER FOR PEACE IN THE WORLD Martin Luther King said The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace, and brotherhood. Jesus was a nonconformist. He was a risk-taker. He brought to us a message of hope. In a world that is full of fear and unending changes, let us all take courage as Jesus did, to push the envelopes of goodness and generosity, not only for our family and our Church, but for community and for the World. Father in Heaven, bless us as we try to understand your experience and multiply it for others around us in our open hands, open pocketbooks, and open hearts. Help all of us take the chance of speaking to the stranger and being kind to the ornery. Help us see You in the faces of others. Amen.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME and are interested in joining First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, please indicate your desire to Pastor ByRoade so we can arrange a gathering of our Session.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING Sixty years ago, in response to the devastation of World War II, a Saturday evening nationwide broadcast asked Americans to give generously the next morning in their churches. A remarkable variety of national leaders and celebrities participated in the broadcast, and more than 75,000 churches responded! Today, many Christian denominations work together cooperatively to fund various ministries through Church World Service. Presbyterian gifts are directed through this ministry to Self-Development of People, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and the Presbyterian Hunger Program. Envelopes for ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING are in your giving envelope box. Please give generously.
WERE GOING TO CHIP (Clearwater Homeless Intervention Project) this coming Friday, April 17. Can you prepare a cold dish for delivery to our homeless friends? Please sign up for meat, salad, fruit or cookies at the CHIP table in Hager Hall after the service. If we all do a little, we can make a lot of difference!
RELAY FOR LIFE Friday, April 24th at Dunedin Stadium. This is a great way to support a worthwhile event while getting to know some of your fellow church members. There will be an information table in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, April 19th before and after the traditional service. This will be a great opportunity to turn in your bottles of dimes, sign up to join our team, purchase a chance to win a lovely colored pencil drawing by Dunedin artist and church member Nancy Christy and purchase a luminary in honor or memory of a loved one who has fought this disease called cancer. If you would like more information, contact Linda Frazer at 791-0912.
